Work in groups. Discuss the questions. (Đây là câu hỏi thảo luận mở – gợi ý câu trả lời mẫu theo văn bản *Culture Shock* trong SGK Tiếng Anh 12 KNTT.)

a) What kind of culture shock do you think foreigners may experience in Viet Nam?

Foreigners coming to Viet Nam may experience several kinds of culture shock:

- Food and eating habits: Many dishes are unfamiliar (e.g. *phở*, fermented shrimp paste *mắm tôm*, *balut*). Vietnamese people often share dishes placed in the middle of the table and use chopsticks, which can feel strange to newcomers.
- Language barrier: Vietnamese is a tonal language, so foreigners may find it hard to understand or make themselves understood, especially outside big cities.
- Traffic and crowds: The heavy motorbike traffic and the way people cross the street can be overwhelming and frightening at first.
- Social customs and non-verbal communication: Differences in greetings, the importance of respecting elders, taking off shoes before entering a house, bargaining at markets, and different ideas about personal space or punctuality.
- Climate and daily rhythm: The hot, humid weather and the habit of taking a midday nap may be difficult to get used to.

As a result, newcomers may go through the usual stages of culture shock mentioned in the text: the exciting honeymoon stage, followed by frustration and anxiety, before they gradually adjust and feel at home.

b) What will you do to help them overcome it?

To help foreigners overcome culture shock, I will:

- Give them useful information in advance about Vietnamese customs, food and traffic so they know what to expect.
- Teach them some basic Vietnamese words and phrases for greetings, shopping and asking for directions.
- Act as a guide and companion, taking them to try local food, visit markets and use public transport until they feel confident.
- Be patient, friendly and encouraging, explaining the reasons behind our customs and reassuring them that the uncomfortable feelings are normal and temporary.
- Introduce them to a community of local friends or an international club so they can make friends and feel less homesick.

In this way, they can move more quickly from the frustration stage to the adjustment stage and enjoy living in Viet Nam.
